Maternity Session Prep Guide & FAQs

When to Schedule

For most soon to be mums, the perfect time for your maternity session seems to be somewhere between the 30 and 32-week mark.  You might wonder why this time is preferred.  It is the time where your belly is the perfect size but you are not swollen and uncomfortable like you will be towards the final couple of weeks of your pregnancy.  This is when you are feeling your best and are more comfortable.

What to Wear

One of the most important decisions you will make regarding your maternity session is what you will wear.  This will play a major role in how your feel during the session as well as the photographs once they are completed.

Our goal is to show off your beautiful baby body, so some of the clothes you should pick should be more snug fitting.  Long maxi dresses that flow work really well.

If you are concerned about the colours you are selecting, we can tell you that solid colours tend to work the best.  If you are looking for advice on specific colours, we will tell you that this decision is completely up to you.  However, some of our favourites are fall colours and shades of cream/white.  The only thing that is important is that you feel comfortable, confident and beautiful as you can be.

We do have maternity gowns which you are more than welcome to use, just send us a message and we can decide which one to wear together.

For your session, please wear nude coloured underwear (boy-short, a thong or high cut briefs are best) and a nude coloured strapless push-up bra. We do not recommend wearing a regular bra and tucking in the straps, as this can lead to a lack of support, and bumpy material under the dress. Sometimes, we will not be able to edit out these imperfections, and it is better for everything to look the best it can during the session rather than trying to fix things later.  Please also make sure that the underwear you choose is not too tight.  Panty lines will show in the form fitting, tight gowns. It is much better to have loose underwear without those visible bumps and indentations under the gown.

For Men, we suggest solid and simple clothing. We want them to be very comfortable as well. Little boys should be similar to dad and both are welcome to bring light and dark shirts. Light patterns or textures are ok.  Lastly, we suggest that girls wear a natural coloured dress.

Location

Maternity Sessions can either take place in the studio located in Yanchep, or at a chosen location.

What Happens After?

After your session, it usually takes up to 2-3 weeks before your gallery is finished and ready for viewing.

The best 20 images from your maternity session will be uploaded into an online password protected online gallery. You may share your password with family or friends is you do wish.

Newborn Session Prep Guide & FAQs

When is the best time to book my newborn session?

As soon as possible! If you are pregnant, email us now to pencil in your session one week after your due date. Once bubs is born let us know and we will amend the booking to around the time your baby is 7-9 days old. We find they are the sleepiest under 10 days of age. We only take a limited number of sessions a week so that we are flexible enough if the babies arrive earlier/later expected.

What should we wear?

Plain coloured clothes work best, black, white, or pastels. Try to avoid huge logos and patterns. Mums will not be photographed below the waist so wear whatever feels comfortable for your session. Dads usually wear a black or white shirt, polo shirt or t-shirt with a pair of jeans.

If photographing siblings, we suggest bringing along a white and black t-shirt for the boys to complement dad. Girls usually wear a neutral coloured dress to complement mum. We do have dresses available for use, if you have no luck finding something for your session.

What to bring!

Formula or extra milk (if you are pumping and or bottle feeding).

A set of extra clothes for you and baby (we might get peed or pooped on),

A blanket or wrap,

Dummy (if applicable), and

An heirloom or prop that you would like to add to the session – Please contact me prior so we can plan to accommodate your special request.

How long will the session take?

Sessions take between 2 – 3 hours, depending on how settled baby is. Babies run on their own schedules so the majority of our time will be spent making sure baby is settled.

Can we have family pictures with our baby?

Yes! These are our most favourite images to capture.

Can our other children be photographed?

Absolutely! All of our sessions include sibling images. These can take a little time to capture, so patience is key!

What if my baby poops or pees on your items?

This is normal! Everything is washable and gets washed after each and every session.

What if my baby cries?

Babies cry! We have experience working with newborn babies and so we have lots of little tricks to settle baby.

Can we bring other family members?

Due to the lack of studio space, it would be best to have only immediate family present. If you do intend bringing a grandparent or additional family members, please do let me know prior to your session.

Can we take pictures during our session?

We ask parents not to bring their camera or recording device to the session. This includes not taking photos or videos with your mobile phone.

Can we bring snacks and drinks?

Yes! Your session will be 2-3 hours!  We would highly recommend that you bring a snack and a drink with you, especially if you have other children with you.

What if I need to reschedule?

We require 48 hours notice to reschedule. After that you will forfeit your session deposit.

Tips for Baby

Dress baby in a sleeper that is easy to remove.

Try to time your last feed so that baby will be hungry when you get to the studio and plan to feed upon arrival.

If you are breastfeeding, try to avoid stimulants the morning of your session (dairy, caffeine, chocolate spicy foods etc).

Once baby has had a top up, we will wrap your baby loosely in a blanket before the session begins with their nappy loose. This will not only make your baby more comfortable, but it will make it easier to remove the nappy once your baby has settled.

There will be no need for complete silence during our session, in fact We encourage general conversation. We will have white noise playing during our session to help your baby be more comfortable.

Please note that sudden noises of siblings or mobile phones will usually disrupt our session and may startle your baby. If you do require your mobile phone during our session, could you please ensure that this is switched on to silent.

We generally start with siblings, then the whole family. Once we have taken sibling and family images, we will then take images of mum and baby, dad and baby, and a few other combinations finishing off the last hour or so with just baby on his or her own. Usually once the sibling has been photographed Dad, Grandma or whoever you choose can take baby’s sibling home for a rest, or lunch etc as it can get quite boring for them in the studio. This leaves Mum here rested and enjoying the peace before the mayhem again at home.

What happens after our session has finished?

After your session, it usually takes up to 2-3 weeks before your gallery is finished and ready for viewing.

The best 20/25 images from your session will be uploaded into an online password protected online gallery. You may share your password with family or friends is you do wish.

Once you have received your online gallery, you will select your favourite images and have the option to purchase any additional images, fine art prints or decide to frame your stunning new images.

Most of our photography packages do come with a beautiful wooden USB for you to keep. If you are local to the area, we will arrange a suitable time to drop off your USB and any additional items you may have purchased from your session.

Family Session Prep Guide & FAQs

What to wear

Try to find colour combinations that work together. It doesn’t have to match it just has to work together. We don’t recommend all wearing the same colour or identical shirts. Try to stay in a similar colour family. For studio sessions, we recommend natural colours work best.

Large logos should be avoided as they tend to be distracting when it comes to viewing your images. Large logos and bright bold colours can also make your images look outdatedafter a few years.

Feel free to bring an outfit change for some variety. Usually just a quick shirt change is all that you need to change it up.

What to bring

I would definitely advise to bring drinks to your session, standing, sitting and posing can be thirsty work!

If your child has a favourite toy or teddy, which you wouldn’t mind getting into some images, bring it along too.

What will the studio session be like?

One of the benefits to indoor sessions is that everyone can relax. Sessions are for 45 minutes to 1 hour so that children (and even parents) have some time to warm up and be themselves.

If your child is particularly shy, no worries! We can sit and play for a minute or chat until they feel more comfortable.

How long do sessions last for?

Depending on your chosen package, sessions can take anywhere between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

What happens after the session?

After your session, it usually takes up to 2-3 weeks before your gallery is finished and ready for viewing.

The best 20-30 images from your family session will be uploaded into an online password protected online gallery. You may share your password with family or friends is you do wish.

Once you have received your online gallery, you will select your favourite images and have the option to purchase any additional images, fine art prints or decide to frame your stunning new images.
